Abstract:	The talk applies a little-received theory of digitization to a historical object of digitization using a deep-learning approach. The theoretical starting point is that digitization began in the nineteenth century, which can be exemplified in the historical discourse of education in Switzerland. Overcoming the understanding of digitization as a technical-media concept, one can ask how social development has made digitization so successful in the first place. This can be answered in terms of systems theory by understanding digitization as a social function: Society creates a solution to deal with its own complexity by creating a system of complexity-reducing distinctions. To think of society as society - and not as an imagined homogeneity such as nation, federation, Reich - it is necessary to recognize social structures. These structures, e.g., groups, strata, classes, typical biographies, will be considered as independent and relevant patterns that could be recombined again and again to get a patterned idea of the social whole. The talk is based on a corpus of digitized texts of periodicals from Switzerland between 1800 and 1870. To investigate the use of social and educational statistics, tables are automatically identified in the corpus based on document page scans. In total, over 62,000 pages are analyzed using deep learning-based models to identify positions of tables. We experiment with two freely available pre-trained models and combine their output to improve overall precision. A web application is provided for manual inspection of the result.
