| Abstract: | Many physicians in Germany and the German-speaking part of Switzerland have been recruited from abroad or migrated to German-speaking countries. While studies on trained doctors with a migration background exist with regard to English-speaking countries, international medical doctors and psychologists who use (L2) German as their professional medium are underresearched. Based on a corpus of guideline-driven, semi-narrative interviews with international physicians and psychologists in German as a foreign or second language, the present study explores how these ‘international doctors’ working in a foreign healthcare environment linguistically reflect adjustment processes in their professional identities. Excerpts from interviews are analysed linguistically regarding speech actions that reflect adjustment processes. Finally, they are compared against a model of professional identity readjustment (Hohenstein & Lévy-Tödter, 2020) that allows them to be seen as a series of steps in developing a multilingual-intercultural, international professionalism. |
