Abstract: The IEEE 802.1 Audio Video Bridging (AVB) task group started to specify a QoS framework for deterministic Ethernet. An initial set of protocol extensions focused on audio and video, but industrial applications have comparable requirements. The scope for the next step was therefore extended to other and even more demanding application domains such as industrial control, vehicular applications, and radio over Ethernet. The task group was renamed to Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and new working items were considered. The paper provides an overview of the elements of TSN and how they work together.
