Zusammenfassung: This paper presents the research-driven design, development and implementation of an online learning platform to improve student and professional translators’ instrumental competence and to enhance their information literacy skills. These are considered key components of translation competence, not only by recognized theoretical models, but also by professional practice and European translation pedagogy. The RISK platform, an acronym for the German Recherche und Informationsmanagement für Sprache und Kommunikation (“information research and management for language and communication”), is the core element of a dedicated course in information literacy skills offered to first-year undergraduate students of translation at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences’ Institute of Translation and Interpreting. It has also been made freely available to language professionals inside and outside Switzerland. Consciously echoing Pym’s (2008) concept of modern, technology-driven translation practices as a form of risk management, and endeavouring to help minimize that risk, the platform is the product of extensive ongoing cognitive research on workplace translation processes conducted at our institute. This paper will present relevant aspects of that research and focus on its application to the design and development both of the innovative RISK platform itself and of the blended-learning course in which it is embedded.
