Abstract: A novel model for a macro-level description of a production line is presented. An approach is presented which allows the modelling of large parts of the production line by a single characteristic function which describes the dynamical behaviour under stationary conditions. Given the characteristic functions of the different parts of the production line, the production rate can be calculated without simulation of the whole line. Since the model is based on a macro-level description, it is expected that it will improve the understanding of the dynamical behaviour of a production line.
