Abstract: Green roofs have several advantages compared to other flat roof solutions such as water retention, additional insulation, cooling of the building and therefore reduction of cooling needs, air humidification and promotion of the biodiversity. Building regulations supporting green roofs are being implemented around the world and in some regions green roofs are mandatory. Flat roofs are as well valuable areas for the installation of photovoltaic systems. Therefore, the combination of photovoltaics and green roofs is of great interest. In addition to the typical installation of PV modules at low tilt angles, vertically installed bifacial modules in combination with green roofs turned out to be an attractive photovoltaic concept, as the entire roof area can be used for greening, and the maintenance effort can be kept relatively low. For the first time the energy yield of vertically installed photovoltaic systems in dense arrangements with ground cover ratios of 100 % and more are presented and compared to east/west and south oriented systems with monofacial modules at low tilt angles as reference systems. Measurement data of real systems on roof tops collected over a duration of over one and a half year, is compared to measurements of different test systems and to yield simulations. We show that even an increase of the ground cover ratio GCR from 0.5 to 1 can be reasonable for vertical bifacial PV, depended on the cost for modules and the sub-construction.
