Abstract: Youth words are particular key words as lexical markers that provide an indication of how young people perceive and reflect current social, digital and political developments. They thus give youth more visibility in public discourse. One way in which youth language can be present in public discourse is the Youth Word of the Year. Recent media contributions on youth words from blogs, forums, websites and online magazines can be found in the German, Anglo-American, French, Italian and Scandinavian regions – which provides an indication of the increase in public interest in youth words. However, the actual research on youth language (Groff et al. 2022, Ziegler 2018) is lacking a focus on lexical and semantic features in the form of key words. This is problematic – firstly, because youth language conveys the social and political perspectives of young people via key words; secondly, because the views of young people and they themselves become visible in public discourse via their language and can thus be given greater consideration. Thirdly, because the socio-political decision-making processes of today still take place without the adults of tomorrow. In my presentation I will show the potential of key words for the perception of youth in public discourse. In the first part, I will take a closer look at the current state of youth language research, followed by a look at the international perception of youth language in the public media (part 2). In part three, I present the German Youth Word of the Year initiative. Finally, in part 4, I discuss the opportunities and challenges of such initiatives for society and research.
