Abstract: | In the aftermath of the attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, there was a remarkable debate in the media and on social media on the limits of satire, as well as the responsibility of the media and of journalists. Media houses published lengthy explanations on why they had decided to publish or not to publish the cartoons and/or the first Charlie Hebdo cover after the attack. In countless variations, two irreconcilable positions were held against each other: Printing cartoons offending Islam is protected by the freedom of expression, versus printing cartoons offending Islam is violating the dignity of Muslims. This contribution first looks at the arguments and justifications of media around the world. Based on a content analysis, it describes and structures the basic lines of argument representing different views on how the concept of responsible, ethical journalism is understood and interpreted, from media around the world. In a second step, this presentation will try to bring the different lines of seemingly irreconcilable positions together in a framework of media ethics. While the discipline of media ethics and journalism studies cannot provide us with the answer whether the cartoons should be published or not, they can at least provide us with a model which allows us to systematically look at the various arguments brought about by media houses and journalists, and integrate them into a more comprehensive analysis. |
