Abstract: With consumers searching for authentic and unique products, handcrafted goods and bespoke artisanal creations are in high demand. Connoisseurs and craft enthusiasts often celebrate the preservation of tradition, while artisans find themselves in a complex dynamic between continuity and change. They must decide which traditional practices to preserve and where to innovate to be successful in a market environment that favors flexibility and those able to adapt quickly, but at the same time pays a premium on tradition, heritage and handmade. New technologies are often a source of innovation but need to be adopted carefully by artisans to ensure they do not compromise on what makes their creations valuable to consumers. This study explores how bespoke men’s tailors in Italy reconcile the need for innovation and the conservation of their craft tradition, and it reveals the inventiveness of a new generation of artisans who sustain the “living tradition” of Italian bespoke tailoring. The findings confirm earlier studies conducted in different contexts and show that, besides mastery of traditional craft techniques, the artisan’s responsiveness to changing market conditions and consumer behavior, acquisition of new capacities and collaborations are vital to entrepreneurial success in the contemporary market for craft and handmade luxury.
