dc.description.abstractThis paper discusses the challenges and approaches which are specific for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the transformation from products to services. We elaborate why servitization is relevant for SMEs and discuss strategic options for servitization in terms of value generation and differentiation with their products and beyond. The hurdles that a manufacturer encounters during the transformation from products to services are highlighted. The focus is put on the major challenges specifically for SMEs, which are located in the areas of data analytics and in the design of customer centred services. We elaborate approaches for the SMEs to overcome these challenges by forming manufacturing service ecosystems. The paper concludes by giving an outlook on further research questions in the area of data and analytics required for product-service transformation. The analysis and the new concepts discussed in this paper are validated in a field study with several SMEs.de_CH
