Zusammenfassung: Protective diodes are often a point of confusion and discussion. The purpose of this paper is to give design rules for protective diodes in custom designed modules. There are two types of protective diodes, the string diodes and the bypass diodes. String diodes are not necessary for fixed installations. Bypass diodes must be applied every 20 cells for modules with all strings in series, every 15 cells for modules with two strings in parallel or every 12 cells for modules with more strings in parallel.
