Zusammenfassung: Meeting the huge variety of patient’s needs is only partially possible with standard medical implants. Optimally, medical implants should not only well integrate with tissues but also be compatible to the shape and size of the defect, its internal structure and mechanical properties. For bone implants titanium alloy Ti6Al4V is widely used. Ti6Al4V possesses a much higher stiffness compared to human bone, leading to stress shielding at the bone-implant interface that causes bone resorption and loosening of the implant. Specifically designed porous titanium structures with significantly reduced stiffness match better the properties of human bone. In particular custom-designed titanium implants in combination with functionally graded porosity show great potential in customized implants. Additive manufacturing technology Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is a technique that allows layer-wise generation of such complex metal structures with controlled architecture. The aim of this work was to evaluate structure parameters of SLM manufactured porous titanium structures for bone implants and their effect on mechanical properties and biological response. Furthermore, the basic suitability of porous titanium structures was investigated in a comparative study with commercially available material.
