In this talk I will share some informed speculations on how the general availability of powerful large language models (LLM) might influence writing and writing research in years to come. Mature resources from natural language processing (NLP) running on even small devices with immense computing power will offer a new line of writing support, encompassing all aspects and sub-processes. We might even see the development of entirely new writing technologies. First studies and experiments shed some light on how writers use out-of-the-box LLM-based interactive text production applications. Mostly, we are still tinkering with how to integrate those into established processes by delegating some aspects to friendly chatbots. However, based on ongoing developments in NLP, software engineering, and user-centered design we may have the chance to finally tackle some demands and ideas for writing support which so far could not be implemented due to technical limitations. Adding generative AI to writing will also pose a challenge to researching writing processes: Can existing writing models account for machine writing assistants that clearly go beyond checkers for spelling, grammar, and style? And how do we study this "new writing", i.e., how do we collect, analyze, and model writing process data? Finally, putting ourself into the other corner: Can writing models help us to explain to the general public how automated text production by large language models work?de_CH
