Abstract: Purpose: The challenge of remote leadership has become increasingly relevant in the context of the growing adoption of flexible work arrangements. This paper focuses on the transformation of hierarchical and shared leadership structures in response to a sudden shift to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. It explores how leadership sources and dynamics have evolved during lockdown periods and assesses their effectiveness in addressing the difficulties associated with remote collaboration. Design/methology/approach: The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative exploration through focus groups with quantitative data collection via an online survey. In an ANOVA analysis, changes in leadership stimuli are compared. Findings: The results demonstrate that shifts in leadership sources have a considerable influence on addressing remote work challenges, with hierarchical and shared leadership fulfilling distinct roles. A reduction in leadership has adverse effects on challenges related to communication and self-leadership. Originality/value: The study's findings underscore the importance of effective leadership in the transition to remote work and recommend organizations to qualify their line managers for distance leadership. Furthermore, emphasizing shared leadership alongside hierarchical leadership can enhance organizations' ability to achieve common goals in remote work settings.
