Abstract: This article traces the fruitful role of publicly exhibited urban scale models (maquettes urbaines), exemplified by the redevelopment project of Les Halles in Paris from 1968 to 1982. During the nearly twenty-year development history of the former marketplace in the historic Baltard Pavilions, countless attempts were made to find a suitable and politically successful new project. From the first public exhibition in March 1968, the urban scale model played a key role in facilitating communication between the Parisian population and the administration of the City of Paris. But the impact that the urban scale models would have on the population was clearly underestimated, and their public staging resulted in the emergence of vigorous debates about the future of the Les Halles site.
