Abstract:	Pension funds increasingly take account of sustainability issues in their asset allocation, and beneficiaries have, generally, been shown to approve of this shift in their pension savings. We evaluate the prevalence of resulting cognitive spillover effects in the form of moral licensing or moral consistency based on experimental evidence using the beneficiaries of a Swiss-based pension fund (n=573). Our results point to a strong salience effect with participants investing significantly more in a sustainable investment option after having been pointed to the relevance of sustainability in general. However, once we additionally tell them their pension fund pursues a distinct sustainable investment strategy, allocations to the sustainable option reduce significantly. This finding indicates that the explicit communication of the sustainability strategy of pension funds can result in a rebound effect in the form of moral licensing by beneficiaries.
