Abstract: | This bachelor thesis was conducted in collaboration with the student research group ARIS. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of the Helvetia sounding rocket with three different fin shapes. Two of the fin designs are provided by ARIS whereas the last design is an original creation that was aimed to be an optimized draft compared to the previous designs. The fins are evaluated in terms of lift, drag and effect on the center of pressure in supersonic condition. The goal is to find which fin design is most suitable for the Helvetia rocket. This study is performed by conducting CFD simulations. Ultimately, it was discovered that the original Helvetia fin proves to be the most suitable. However, given the lessons learned, implementing certain refinements to the internal design has the potential to surpass the efficiency of the Helvetia fin. This would need to be confirmed in future studies. Lastly, the second ARIS fin proved to be unsuitable for the Helvetia rocket. |
