| Abstract: | Facing high expectations to innovate public services and pressure to solve societal problems many public sector organisations have established innovation labs to strengthen their capacity to introduce new and innovative solutions. However, our knowledge about the actual contribution of these innovation labs to increasing innovation capacity is still limited. It is difficult to evaluate or compare any impact as innovation labs vary widely. To fill this research gap, the primary goal of this article is to present a typology that allows structuring the landscape of different innovation labs to compare different lab setups. The findings are based on a literature review on mostly qualitative case studies on innovation labs which allows to distil the relevant dimensions that sum up to a typology. The proposed typology is covering three perspectives: 1) value (intended innovation impact of the labs and target groups), 2) network (stakeholders and collaborative arrangements) and 3) governance (role of government or public administration). |
