Abstract:	The Church is a social agent participating in public discussions and therefore finds itself also in the spotlight. If a representative of the church crosses ethical, moral, and especially, legal lines, a public scandal is all but certain. In the case of sexual violence committed by church representatives, it was not only the assault itself that led to public outrage, but also the subsequent response and communication about it. In too many cases, the crisis communication failed, guilt was hidden, or was admitted too late. The reputation of the church was harmed. This article provides an overview of the operations of the news media and introduces studies that explore the relationship between the church and the media, focusing on the sex abuse scandals. These studies show that the reputation of the church was damaged as a result of flawed crisis communication. The essay concludes with suggestions for public handling of guilt by the church in front of the media.
