The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe saw translator education institutions scrambling to find short-term solutions to the challenges of the sudden switch from on-site, face-to-face teaching to online instruction. This has resulted in a tremendous upsurge in synchronous and asychronous online courses, modules and units, together with adapted methods and modes of assessment, which over time have become increasingly aligned with curricular learning outcomes, institutional demands and student needs. However, as the extended peri-COVID stage of translator education starts to enter a post-COVID phase, regulatory requirements, such as COVID certification and testing, institutional strategies to maintain student numbers and heightened student expectations are placing a growing emphasis on offering synchronous hybrid forms of learning. Often implemented without proper piloting or validation, these are distinctly different from empirically validated blended learning scenarios that have for so long been considered best practice in distance learning. Hybridity is not only resource-intensive in terms of infrastructure, cost and working time, it also calls for teachers to be specially trained and coached in the various techniques, presenting institutions and programmes with particular challenges. In this presentation, I shall consider these challenges from the dual perspectives of the institution and the teacher, referring back to initiatives and case-study data undertaken at ZHAW’s Institute of Translation and Interpretation (IUED) during the early and main stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. I shall then outline the motivations, design and provisional results of pilot studies launched to prepare for the late peri- and post-COVID phases of translator education. These will consider the caveats and alternatives to hybrid teaching, including the key concept of mode-switching being developed at IUED.de_CH
