dc.description.abstract | Emotional competencies have received increasing attention from translation scholars who argue that they can be an important predictor of translator behaviour and influence work performance and satisfaction (Hubscher-Davidson 2016, 2017; Lehr 2011, 2014; Rojo 2017). More generally and across different professions, emotional competencies have also been found to be the most important predictor for job performance after cognitive ability (O’Boyle et al., 2011). Although psychological research has demonstrated that emotional competencies can be developed and meaningfully improved through relatively brief tailor-made training interventions, there are currently no training interventions specifically adapted to the needs of the translation profession. Building on a set of successful controlled experimental studies in the field of emotional intelligence, the present paper outlines the design of an 18-hour empirically-derived training intervention tailored to the needs of translators. More specifically, the training intervention aims to test whether developing the emotional intelligence of students enrolled on an MA Translation programme could lead to improved emotional functioning, long-term personality changes, and positive implications for important life outcomes, such as psychological well-being and graduate employability. The authors will situate their research within the literature on emotional intelligence and illustrate the relevance of emotional competencies for translator training. | de_CH |
