Different types of Erlenmeyer flasks (invented in 1860) and Fernbach-style flasks (invented around 1900 for cultures that require a high gas-liquid interface) are the predominant designs for shake flask cultivations (Winkler & Socher, 2014). Although Erlenmeyer flasks were not originally designed as bioreactors, their use has resulted mainly from their availability. This implies some disadvantages, e.g. the relatively low filling volume (Bruecher, 2015). The Thomson Instrument Company recently introduced newly designed shake flasks, explicitly developed for bacterial (Ultra Yield Flasks™) and cell cultures (Optimum Growth Flasks™) . The flasks are claimed to have a higher yield than Fernbach-style flasks . The poster presentation proposed will give an overview of different procedural parameters (mixing time, volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLa, and evaporation rate) for Thomson Optimum Growth™ shake flasks, enabling scientists to compare and evaluate this new design with the established ones. Furthermore, the power input will be characterized using the open source computational fluid dynamics toolbox OpenFOAM®.en
