dc.description.abstractBackground: In Switzerland, health professionals in Advanced Practice (AP) roles care to fulfil their patients’ unmet needs, despite lack of a legal basis for the AP scope of practice. In 2016, the Swiss parliament voted against establishing a framework for AP regulation, contributing to informal practice and lack of role clarification. Despite this, universities in Switzerland continue to train Nurses, Midwifes and Physiotherapists in Advanced practice at a master level, such as in the Master of Science programs at ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences. Since 2019, students acquire competencies in interprofessional collaboration and the development, implementation and evaluation of AP-roles in an interprofessional education module. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the education module for Advanced Practice competencies and to explore how well it prepares students for their future AP including the development and implementation of their roles. Methods: Data was collected between 2020-2022 using standardized questionnaires, students’ reflective notes and focus group discussions with students and lecturers. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis techniques. Findings: In total, 67 students participated in the standardized questionnaires and 114 reflective notes were included in the analysis. 8 focus group discussions were performed involving 28 students and 37 lecturers. Students described the education module as having high clinical relevance. They were able to complete a work shadowing in different institutions and develop a role description as part of their assignment. The interprofessional elements across the module facilitated role clarity by allowing discussions and critical reflections. Exchanges with other health professionals made it possible for students to take on new perspectives on AP roles and raised their awareness of the importance of stakeholder involvement in practice development projects. Students felt prepared to outline strategies for implementing AP roles within a specific context and health care setting. Conclusion: This education module prepares students for the development and implementation of new AP roles while also facilitating reflection and interprofessional collaboration. As health professionals in AP roles are expected to continue to play an important role in the Swiss health care system, it remains important to evaluate their education and its clinical relevance and practice impact.de_CH
