dc.description.abstract | This paper examines how Swiss plants respond to a carbon tax that was increased by 400% during the period 2008-2015. In response to the tax and unrelated to sector affiliation, we find that while plants reduced carbon emissions by 12-15%, energy consumption fell by 4-6%. These results are consistent with a series of CO2 fuel tax elasticities estimates ranging between -0.1 and -0.23. Plants in the service sector exclusively reduced emissions by consuming less fossil fuels, whereas plants in the industry sector also increasingly switched to the less carbon-intensive natural gas. Finally, more heavily taxed plants due to a relatively carbon-intensive energy mix as well as plants with high pre-policy emission levels decreased emissions disproportionately. | de_CH |
