There is an increasing relevance of quality management certifications for health care organizations to assess, improve and communicate their quality of care. However, certification procedures, such as ISO, applied to the health care sector were originally developed for the manufacturing industry. Therefore, the focus of their assessments lies in the management systems of organizations that are criticized for being too generic. However, medical and care services constitute the main value creation of a health care provider. Consequently, a quality certification should focus on the quality of the medical treatment and care procedures and standards. Several authors indicate a lack of research on such care-specific certification procedures. This article demonstrates the need for a high quality of care certification, discusses the seven key challenges in the development of a Swiss certificate for care excellence and provides an outlook of the ongoing government-funded project “Swiss care excellence certificate”.de_CH
