Zusammenfassung: Over the last three decades, writing in the financial world has been affected by financial crises and a fundamental technological change. What used to be diligent text crafting with relaxed deadlines has turned into high-speed text production with transient digial media. Texts are outdated within a few days, hours, or even minutes. Moreover, the relentless introduction of additional guidelines and rules in the aftermath of the financial crisis 2007 has become a straightjacket for the writers. In my presentation, I discuss the consequences of this digital literacy shift for professional writers in the domain of finance and its impact on society at large. By doing so, I draw on 25 years of ethnographic field research and a large corpus of financial texts, collected between 1990 and 2019. This data allows for the longitudinal study of writing practices with regard to the financial community. Long-term ethnographic content analysis is combined with pragmatic text analysis to describe the gradual change in text production and text products. I begin the presentation by defining two key concepts: financial literacy and context awareness (part 1). Based on a long-term qualitative English, Japanese, and German corpus from transdisciplinary research projects in the field of financial communication (part 2), I use pragmatic text analysis (part 3) to discuss which consequences the digital literacy shift has for relevant parts of the target readers and what the social costs of this shift can be (part 4). I conclude by outlining research based measures that can improve the communicative potential of financial text products (part 5).
