Abstract: The last thirty years have witnessed a steady increase in the pursuit and status of translation process research (TPR) and of audiovisual translation (AVT) research in translation studies. This chapter explores past, present and potential future intersections between the two fields. Distinguishing between TPR in AVT reception studies and research focussed on the processes of AV translators as they work, including applied didactic studies directed at translator’s competence development, it considers the historical and theoretical foundations of TPR in AVT research and the current underdeveloped state of TPR in the context of AVT. Based on evidence that AVT researchers are beginning to move from an exclusive focus on AVT products and their reception to one that encompasses the processes of production and those actually doing the translations, the chapter concludes by sketching out future prospects for more extensive interfaces within the framework of an incipient cognitive audiovisual translatology.
