Zusammenfassung: This lecture and workshop are divided into three parts. In the first part, the historical development of models of translation competence and translation competence development will be critical reviewed and gaps explored. The growing awareness of the situatedness of translation work and the key influence and constraints of sociotechnical systems on translation competence and its development/acquisition is explored. A number of key models are placed under close scrutiny with reference to the results of empirical experimental and workplace research undertaken at our Institute and elsewhere. In the second part, specific attention is given to curriculum development past and present, which will be aligned with current co-emergent models of competence development. These will be set in the broader context of institutional/organisational development and learning, with important ramifications for staff development. The third part is devoted to emerging new interprofessional, paraprofessional and metaprofessional profiles in T&I. The challenges of neural machine translation and other forms of artificial intelligence are discussed, but also the opportunities these afford to T&I as the professions re-position themselves to maximise the potential of the adaptive, creative and reflective dimensions human added value and the human value proposition. The implications and applications of this shift in terms of curriculum development and continuing professional education are considered.
