Zusammenfassung: Noise is among the most frequent complaints in offices. A common reaction of facilities managers to noise complaints in offices is the measurement of physical noise. This approach, however, is not very promising because it is based on the wrong assumption that intensity of physical noise is important in individual office noise experience. Based on the results of a survey with 82 office workers in two different office buildings and the corresponding measurement of physical noise, I argue that non-physical noise characteristics and individual attributes are far more important than intensity of physical noise. Multivariate regression analyses show that the experience of noise is explained by non-physical noise characteristics such as the informational content of noise, sources of noise, individual task and office environment related assessments of task privacy, and traits (sensitivity to noise). Data indicate that physical noise intensity measurements are not related to the experience of noise in any way. Rather, individual noise experience is explained best by sensitivity to noise and ability to concentrate together with ratings of non-physical noise characteristics. These findings indicate that the experience of noise of middle intensity is best explained by a person-environment framework and not by an environmental attributes approach. Implications for facilities management and for further research in office noise are discussed.
