Zusammenfassung: A Eulerian-Lagrangian finite-volume solver was developed on the basis of the open source CFD-toolbox OpenFOAM. It is capable of modelling mass transfer effects between coating pistols and electrically grounded metallic substrates for industrial powder coating applications. The solver considers the fluid dynamics of process airflow, coating-particle-dynamics, fluid-particle, particle-particle and highly detailed particle-substrate interaction including blow-off effects, corona formation around the high voltage electrode as well as particle charging mechanisms within the corona. Having been made compatible with Massive Simultaneous Cloud Computing technology, the solver can now run hundreds of cases simultaneously, simulating coating scenarios with varying process parameter settings. Qualitative and quantitative experimental validation efforts have been conducted and point to a high degree of practical relevance of the technology. The current simulation study serves as demonstration in this context. It predicts and visualises coating-patterns, Coating Efficiencies and a measure for Coating Homogeneity on a U-shaped metallic substrate, under varying Mean Powder Particle Diameters. On this basis and pending certain limitations, optimum Mean Powder Particle Diameters for the powder coating of U-profiles can be proposed, which is a highly relevant statement for powder material suppliers.
