Zusammenfassung: | Pelvic implants, mainly meshes, are load-bearing structures. Therefore it is well accepted that their mechanical properties play an important role determining the outcome after implantation. Next to strength, different aspects of mechanical behavior, such as the non-linear stress-strain relationship, anisotropy or strain history influence the function and the compatibility of the mesh in vivo. Besides, due to the manufacturing technique, meshes are hierarchical, multi-scale structures, which is reflected also in their mechanical properties. Deformation patterns at low length scales, the length scales of the cells, might differ significantly from the macro-scale deformation and might contribute to the reported complications. Thus aiming at mechanically biocompatible implant designs, these lower length scales need to be accounted for. Alternative materials derived by electrospinning, featuring a completely different micro- and nanostructure compared to meshes, have recently been suggested for pelvic floor repair. Though promising outcomes regarding host immune response have been reported, their mechanical biocompatibility remains to be shown. |
