Zusammenfassung: | Discourse ethics is an ethical philosophy based on communicative action and reason. It has gained prominence through the works of the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas, among others, and stands in the tradition of the cognitivist-rational ethics, established by Immanuel Kant. However, in contrast to the Kantian philosophy, it does not derive the validity of its ethical norms from individual self-reflection, but, rather, assumes that society and social life constitute themselves through communication. It thereby follows the linguistic turn in philosophy, that means, it studies the implications of language and communication for social phenomena, and develops its modes of operation from a theory of communicative action. The theory of communicative action postulates that individuals coordinate their actions in their social life through communicative exchange processes, or communicative action. The aim of communication is thereby to foster understanding among the participating parties. Discourse ethics has received considerable attention in organization and management research, and more recently, in leadership studies. It is for instance leveraged as a procedural approach through which leaders can establish ethical and legitimate decisions in exchanges with their stakeholders and invoked in ideas of responsible leadership. The purpose of this entry is to give a brief overview of discourse ethics. To this end, the entry will first discuss the assumptions of the philosophical concept. It will then highlight some of the criticism and discuss how this critique led to broaden the concept and to inform ideas of deliberative democracy. Finally, it will refer to the implications of discourse ethics for organization and leadership theory. |
