Zusammenfassung: Telescopes are used to observe distant objects by creating an image that is larger than what the unaided eye can see. They use optical elements such as lenses and mirrors to gather and focus lights of the distant object. A telescope’s optical elements must be almost perfect in sense of being precisely shaped and aligned to focus the light. The optical elements are mounted on dimensionally stable platforms or optical benches to minimize undesired distortion and maintain the focus. For space application, such platforms must be lightweight and provide sufficient strength to withstand the harsh mechanical environment occurring during rocket launch. Even though the temperature is controlled in orbit, thermo-elastic distortion is an issue. Therefore, such platforms must also have a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) are the appropriate material for this application, because they combine high strength and stiffness with low mass and thermal expansion. The thermal expansion of a quasi-isotropic CFRP laminate is simulated with two different shell model approaches. One simulation is made defining the laminate layup with PCOMP entries and MAT8 cards, the other one using a simple PSHELL property in combination with the isotropic MAT1 card. In order to validate the simulation a quasi-isotropic 32 ply laminate was manufactured and the CTE was measured using laser interferometry. The measured CTE is found to be close and slightly smaller the values obtained from the two numerical simulations.
