| Zusammenfassung: | The functions of foundations can be described by a typology including three dimensions: Goals, approaches, and types of operation. Foundations develop their role as a combination of these three dimensions and are basically defined in this regard by donor intent as laid down in their charters. These three dimensions through their combinations correspond to models of foundation–state relationships. Especially, the types of operations can be further elaborated, in particular with reference to the public benefit contributions of foundations in democracies: Complementarity, substitution, capacity, and innovation are the most prominent types of operation with reference to the state. In general, the role of supporting pluralism and thereby contributing toward the social problem-solving capacity of society needs to be emphasized. However, all these roles raise power issues with regard to growing philanthropic sectors, increasing sizes of individual foundations, and foundation strategies. |
