Zusammenfassung: Objectives and Significance: Meeting friends, mastering challenges and finding quiet places to relax are some of the occupations children describe they do on playgrounds. However, children with disabilities often report that they are excluded from play occupations on outdoor playgrounds. Similar, persons involved in the design of playgrounds report to encounter barriers from community attitudes and lack of knowledge when aiming to build inclusive playgrounds. Furthermore, even though according to the United Nations Rights of the Child playgrounds should be designed to be accessible for everybody and to apply Universal Design to enhance social inclusion, this is rarely done in practice. The potential impact of the thesis is to provide new knowledge about the design of inclusive playgrounds informed by the perceptions of children with diverse needs, people involved in playground design and experts in Universal Design to enhance play value and social inclusion on playgrounds. Method: Different qualitative methods, including individual interviews, focus groups, a meta-ethnography and a DELPHI study, will be applied. Data will be analysed with qualitative content analysis and thematic analysis. Impact / Results: Overall, preliminary results from children’s and adults’ perspectives let assume that the social environment plays an important role for inclusive playgrounds to become places of social inclusion. Conclusion / Outcomes: When designing inclusive playgrounds, the social aspects of the environment need to be addressed together with the physical environment in order to build a playground for all.
