Zusammenfassung:	The Swiss system with its dual-track VET programmes (apprenticeship) differs from most foreign systems of vocational and professional education and training. It is a successful model which is also receiving increased international attention. The final stage of this education are the Universities of applied sciences. The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) is one of the leading universities of applied sciences in Switzerland and thus offers a wide range of specialist knowledge. All of its Schools carry out disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. The results of ZHAW research projects are both scientifically sound and practice-relevant. The Institute of Natural Resource Sciences (IUNR) emphasizes the interdisciplinary approach to the applied research on the sustainable use of natural resources in both urban and rural areas. The applied projects were carried out together with the business community and were funded by Swiss Federal Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI), Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG). Several projects in which the innovation was transferred from applied research into Swiss agricultural practice, and regional development will be presented.
