Zusammenfassung: Fire blight was detected for the first time in Kazakhstan in 2010 and is now threatening wild species and sustainable fruit production in Central Asia. Phytosanitary monitoring of apple and pear orchards was conducted on farms in Kazakhstan and in the neighboring Kyrgyz Republic. Parts of diseased trees with typical fire blight symptoms were selected for laboratory analysis and the putative bacterial agents were isolated to pure cultures. Morphological, cultural and pathogenicity analyses were performed in local laboratories to reveal the identity of the isolates. The results were verified using immunochromatographic tests and state-of-the-art technologies such as LAMP-PCR or Intact Cell MALDI-ToF MS, proving that fire blight is present at all tested sites. However, only some of the isolates sampled were conclusively demonstrated to be Erwinia amylovora and the percentage of initial correct identifications varied greatly between sampling sites. This underscores the need to improve monitoring procedures in the affected regions and extensively implement standard laboratory protocols for identification of fire blight that take in account the often-limited resources available in these newly affected countries.
