Abstract: For T&I education to remain relevant and necessary to its stakeholders (students, employers, society at large), it must produce graduates who fulfil real societal and economic needs and who receive appropriate rewards for doing so. Underlying trends in an increasingly volatile work market seem to indicate a growing demand for adaptive expertise as a key element in longer-term employability. This presentation shows and discusses the initial results of a survey conducted among members of the Conférence internationale permanente d'instituts universitaires de traducteurs et interprètes (CIUTI). The results show that, from the point of view of CIUTI members, some of the major factors likely to affect graduate employment prospects and working conditions relate to technological advances (automation, deep learning, artificial intelligence), predicted shifts in the segmentation of demand for human T&I services (e.g. towards risk-aware, ethically responsible translation of high-risk documentation, transcreation, user-centred translation, language consultancy, etc.) and the growing diversity of contexts of work for both interpreters and translators. Those factors represent both challenges and opportunities for translator education institutions. Ways of dealing with them will be considered, and future steps briefly discussed and outlined.
