Describes the Family System Test (FAST), a figure-placement technique originally designed to represent cohesion and hierarchy in the family and its subsystems. Recently, this clinically driven technique has been elaborated to describe systems other than families (e.g. patient-physician relations). Test materials, test characteristics (application, length, theoretical assumptions), methods for evaluating responses (qualitative vs quantitative evaluations) as well as psychometric properties and construct validity of the FAST are presented. Three studies are reviewed which describe the application of FAST in clinical settings: (1) family perceptions of children in residential psychiatric treatment, (2) family perceptions of mothers with a developmentally retarded child, (3) correlation of patient-physician relationship with outcome of diabetes therapy. It is concluded that the significant correlation between relational constructs and (psychiatric, medical) treatment outcome warrants further research into the biopsychosocial process of dysfunction.
