Abstract: Since 2007, the Institute of Translation and Interpreting at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland has been carrying out research on the processes and practices of professional translation in the workplace. In this workshop, we present some of the findings we and other researchers have made, looking at the key issue of what constitutes translation expertise, the way it is acquired, and above all how it can be maintained. Using concrete examples, we propose and discuss some general guidelines and measures for improved practice that will be of interest to translation professionals and managers alike.
