Abstract: The internal energy of mixing is the amount of heat exchanged with the surroundings when two or more components are mixed together at constant temperature and volume. Its temperature and composition dependency can be predicted from lattice-fluid theory, which relates those macroscopic properties to the (microscopic) local densities around each species, and the interaction energies between nearest neighbours. When vibrations of molecules and other kinetic effects are neglected, the internal energy becomes the configurational energy. First an expression for the configurational energy of a mixture of monomers is derived from Ono-Kondo lattice theory, which is subsequently used to calculate the energy and entropy of mixing. Expanding the latter expressions into a Taylor series reveals that the leading terms of the excess properties of the energy and entropy of mixing are identical with those obtained from Guggenheim's "Quasi-Chemical Theory", and Freed's "Lattice Cluster Theory".
