Abstract: Using new media, children and adolescents get earlier in contact with reading and writing tasks and learn to write in new styles that are not taught at school. In public discourse it often was criticised that the competence acquired is selective and does not meet normative writing tasks as for instance composition tests at school. It is argued that the students ability to reflect their writing is higher than estimated. Data from a research project on the relation between writing competence and writing in new media are used as documents in support for discussing students writing competence from the teacher’s and from the student’s perspective.
