Abstract: | Teams constitute the building blocks of today’s organizations, and team processes such as communication and coordination represent main drivers of organizational effectiveness. Despite the fact that team processes involve the dynamic interactions of team members, there are still few studies that actually investigate these interaction dynamics in the field. A main reason for this scarcity is that team research often does not consider members' actual behavior, instead focusing on self-reports and other reports derived from retrospective questionnaires. In the current presentation, I will address these issues. To that end, I will present two studies on communication in healthcare teams. The first study investigates how hierarchical differences between team members and leadership centralization influence nurses' voice behavior. The second study compares communication patterns of expert and novice teams. Building on these studies, I will discuss potential implications for team research. In particular, I will try to make a case for pluralism in team research, that is, studying team processes using a combination of different conceptual and methodological approaches. |
