Abstract: Multicultural teams can either be handicapped as they suffer from the cultural differences among members, or they may feel enabled as they recognize these differences as opportunities. It was the object of a research and development project conducted by the Universities of Applied Sciences Winterthur and Chur (Switzerland) to analyze the conditions in which such multicultural teams were able to seize their competitive advantage. A prerequisite is finding a common working language capable also of expressing emotion. Teams must have adequate ways of dealing with diversity, such as ethnorelative attitudes towards others. Each team has a certain life cycle with phases in which various members take on specific roles, which may require support from coaches.
