Community interpreting has traditionally been described as a socially situated activity. Drawing upon the Heidelberg School’s psycholinguistic interpreting model as a theoretical framework and updating it with insights from functional pragmatics, this paper outlines why it is just as much a cognitively situated activity relying on knowledge-based inferences. On the basis of data from a larger Swiss hospital-based study, it shows how a lack of different sub- and superordinate knowledge structures in institutionalized medical interpreting settings may often be at the root of unsuccessful interpreting.de_CH
