The aim of the present study is to examine the preconditions for successful and efficient knowledge transfer between different sites of multinational production companies, taking into account the characteristics of knowledge-sending and knowledge-receiving sites. In their research, the authors examine how the efforts made by sites, the collaboration tools they use, and coordination mechanisms contribute to successful knowledge transfer. The study includes thirteen case studies conducted in four European countries (Switzerland, Romania, Albania and Macedonia). Given the exploratory nature of the research, the authors used a qualitative research method. The main method of data collection was based on the methodology of the semi-structured interviews, which were carried out uniformly in the four countries in order to: to draw parallels between the different cases. Their results show that personal interaction between knowledge-sending and knowledge-receiving sites is more important for a successful knowledge transfer than the information systems used or prior material knowledge.de_CH
