A new type of slow running vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) was patented by Agile Wind Power AG (Switzerland). In this concept, a variable blade pitch allows to exploit both aerodynamic lift and drag contributions. In operation, blade-vortex interactions and unsteady phenomena characterize the flow, as the turbine blades undergo large and rapid changes in angle of attack. This paper summarizes the results of a first series of wind tunnel tests on blade section, which provide the evidence that lift contributions are large and essentially originated by dynamic phenomena. The effect of trailing edge shape on blade lift and drag at large angles of attack in static and dynamic conditions have also been analysed. A future experimental test campaign will investigate the effects the blade-wake aerodynamic interference.de_CH
