Abstract: Methods to calculate effects of the accidental release of hazardous chemicals are documented in various national technical standards, guidelines and other bodies of laws. However, these standards differ in methodological concepts, resources needed and tool support. This may leave room for inconsistencies concerning results and subsequently risks figures. Although these differences complicate the point-by-point comparison of results the set of methodologies offer alternatives to scientists and practitioners when looking for most applicable approaches and potential for optimization in methodology and tool development. The comparison, bases on the compilation of standards of two different legislative bodies: the Russian “Method to define the computed value of fire risks in industrial facilities”, implemented into a MS EXCEL prototype tool, and the TNO EFFECTS framework and tool. In order to elaborate the variation effects on the computational results, three flammable substances are considered and recalculated by a case study. The paper concludes that on one side the comparison of both tools is similar for some scenarios, also compared with the case studies and on the other hand scenarios exists, which have different heat flux, and gives a motivation to research the real pool fires and compare these with the existing tools.
