Abstract: This paper presents a model of a unit cell of a PEMFC for applications in portable electronic devices. The model introduces the transport resistance exerted by the electrolyte confined in the active layer using a filmed agglomerate model. The model shows that the microstructure substantially influences the mass transport resistance at the cathode. The mass transport resistance in the gas phase is only at relatively high current densities while the mass transport limitations in the agglomerates, through the hot-pressed electrolyte and the contained water, influence the cell almost throughout the whole range of operation.
