dc.description.abstractFor the application of a model-based control of a fuel cell system a dynamic model of a PEM fuel cell stack is developed. Here, mass balances, thermal balances an electrical model and a membrane model are combined. For the model being applicable to controller design, the underlying partial differential equations have to be discretised to account for mass and heat flow at the gas inlets and outlets. Time-dependent measurement data of a PEM fuel cell stack is used to validate the model. The model is applied to study the dynamic behaviour of PEM fuel cell stacks in a wide range of operating conditions from flooding to dry-out. Special attention is paid to the role of the active catalytic sites and their impact on the dynamic characteristic of the stack. The developed model is of a low system order but shows sufficient accuracy for the design of a control scheme.de_CH
